  1. Washing: While handwashing your ceramics is always recommended to preserve colours and intricate details of your pottery, these pieces are dishwasher safe.  Wash pieces using mild soap and warm water. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers, as they can damage the glaze.
  2. Display with Care: When showcasing your Cynical Ceramics, ensure they are placed on stable surfaces. Keep them away from the edges of shelves or tables to prevent accidental falls.
  3. Microwave: Mugs and tableware from Cynical Ceramics Co. are microwave safe.
  4. Handle with Care: Though our pottery is crafted to be sturdy, treat each piece with care to prevent accidental chipping or breakage. Avoid stacking heavy items on top of each other.
  5. Food Safety: All glazes and materials used yield a product that is food safe.  Some vases and decoration pieces may not be at times; please check the description of the piece where food safety will be clearly stated.

The Art of Handmade Pottery: Unraveling the Cost

Have you ever found yourself enchanted by a beautiful handmade vase or mug, only to be taken aback by its price tag? If it's just a piece of pottery, you might wonder why it has to be so expensive. In this section, we'll explore the reasons behind the higher cost of handcrafted pottery compared to store-bought ceramics.

The Time-Intensive Process:

Crafting pottery involves a series of meticulous stages, from planning and creating to firing – not once but twice! The firing process can be unpredictable, revealing the unforgiving nature of ceramics as an art form. Even if a piece is meticulously crafted, it could unexpectedly crack during firing.

The Mastery of Skills:

Becoming proficient enough to offer pottery on the market takes an immense amount of time and dedication. Hours upon hours are spent honing the craft, mastering techniques, and developing a unique artistic voice. Imagine specializing in making cups – you'd have to experiment with different ways of firing clay pieces, experiencing both moments of success and disappointment. One moment, you hold a stunning vase; the next, you might be faced with a misshapen lump of clay or dozens of scattered fragments.

The Multifaceted Creation Process:

Each finished pottery piece undergoes numerous steps, starting from throwing or building the piece, followed by a slow drying process, hand trimming, adding attachments, and more. Once the bone-dry piece is ready, it undergoes the first kiln firing at around 1855 degrees F, a process that takes an entire day to complete. Afterward, the glaze planning begins, and the pieces are fired again at approximately 2269 degrees F – another full day. Throughout these steps, the outcome remains highly unpredictable, with several factors potentially rendering the pottery unusable.

The Dedication of Ceramic Artists:

Ceramic artists pour an incredible amount of time, energy, and financial resources into ensuring that each piece is executed with precision and artistry. The care and dedication they invest in their craft contribute to the higher cost of handmade pottery. And though the price may be higher, the satisfaction of owning a one-of-a-kind, lovingly crafted piece is immeasurable.

Conclusion:

While it's true that handmade pottery may come with a higher price tag, it's essential to recognize the immense value and artistry that goes into each creation. The process of transforming raw clay into a work of art is a labour of love and dedication, resulting in truly unique pieces that carry the artist's passion within them. The next time you admire a handcrafted pottery piece, remember the journey it took to come to life and the dedication of the artist who made it possible. Thank you for taking the time to learn a bit more about the process and the passion behind our art.
